I read through many, many stories for this review, some in full and some only partially, and there were some that had problematic elements but I initially didn’t write off the whole app because I saw it as more of a marketplace or repository for these stories (like Amazon or a fanfiction website) and didn’t think it could be wholly judged based on problems with some of the stories. What’s wrong with this app? There are a lot of problems with this app, but the most serious problem is that it promotes very unhealthy and dangerous attitudes toward abuse and sexual assault. The app also has some other features but the one most relevant to the rest of this review is the quests feature, where you can get rewards (in-game currency for unlocking more chapters, buying outfits for your characters and making the choices you want) for certain tasks such as reading chapters of certain books. Most of the stories, from what I can tell, contain sexually explicit written scenes (though no nude images are displayed) and from my research it seems many if not all of them are based on actual published romance/erotic novels. The target audience for this app is women who are attracted to men (the character you play is almost always a woman and your love interest is almost always a man). Whether these choices actually impact the endings of the stories or other important plot points I haven’t been able to figure out. At some points throughout the stories you can make choices that affect your characters’ dialog or actions and, consequently, how other characters react to them. What is this app? Moments: Choose Your Story is an interactive fiction app where you play through various storylines (which are basically like romance novels) and features character avatars, backdrops and music with the written dialog and descriptions that make up each story. TL DR VERSION: This app romanticizes verbal, physical and sexual abuse. This review will also mention sex, abuse and rape. Important Note/Content Warning: This app is rated 17+ on the App Store and includes sexually explicit content and content about abuse and rape. I wasn’t planning on writing a review for this app for at least a few more days as I was desperately trying to save up enough free diamonds to finish the one story on there I was actually interested in, but in the course of that I came upon something that pivoted my whole view of the app, and that one story isn’t really relevant anymore. This game is pretty much what you see in the ad, but it’s got a whole lot of problems.
